Photographing Hollywood's Award-Winning Elite: Oscar & Emmy Winners in the Studio
As a portrait photographer, having any subject sit in front of your lens is a privilege. But there is a unique, palpable energy that shifts in the studio when you are photographing an actor who has been recognized at the absolute pinnacle of their craft. Capturing the essence of Oscar and Emmy-winning (and nominated) actors requires moving past the characters they play to find the authentic humanity underneath.
Over the years, my studio has welcomed a remarkable roster of cinematic and television legends. Here is a look back at some of the most memorable Academy Award and Emmy-recognized talent I’ve had the honor of photographing.
🏆 The Academy’s Finest: Oscar Winners & Nominees
There is a distinct gravitas that comes with actors who have caught the eye of the Academy. These sessions are often masterclasses in subtle expression and holding the camera's gaze.
Ciarán Hinds: Nominated for an Oscar for his deeply moving performance in Belfast, Ciarán is a powerhouse of character acting. I’ve had the pleasure of photographing him several times—including promotional portraits for The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power—and he consistently brings a complex, vigorous energy to the studio that is entirely captivating.
Dame Judi Dench: Photographing an Oscar winner and British acting royalty like Dame Judi Dench is an unforgettable experience. Her piercing gaze and quiet command of the space translate into portraits that are as timeless as her legendary career.
Sir Ian McKellen: A multi-time Oscar nominee, Sir Ian brings both theatrical grandiosity and profound vulnerability to a portrait session. Capturing the man behind iconic roles like Gandalf and Magneto was a true career highlight.
Tess Harper: Nominated for an Academy Award for Crimes of the Heart, Tess brings a rich, authentic presence to her portraits, reflecting the depth she brings to the silver screen.
📺 Television Royalty: Emmy Award Winners
With the Golden Age of Television in full swing, these Emmy-winning actors have delivered some of the most compelling performances of our generation.
Stephen Graham: Capturing Stephen's raw, unvarnished intensity is always a thrill. It was an absolute honor to photograph him, especially in light of his recent Emmy win for Outstanding Lead Actor in Netflix's Adolescence.
Brian Cox: Long before he was terrifying audiences as Logan Roy in Succession, Brian Cox took home an Emmy for Nuremberg. In the studio, his formidable presence is perfectly balanced by a sharp, underlying wit.
Tobias Menzies: An Emmy winner for his brilliant turn as Prince Philip in The Crown, Tobias brings a thoughtful, quiet intensity to his sittings, allowing for highly atmospheric and moody portraiture.
William Shatner: Two-time Emmy winner (for The Practice and Boston Legal), Bill is a whirlwind of energy. I had just 15 minutes with the screen icon, resulting in a dynamic and unforgettable portrait.
David Warner: The late, great David Warner, an Emmy winner for Masada, was a true gentleman of the stage and screen. My portraits of him were recently featured in the upcoming film Tron: Ares, a beautiful tribute to his legacy.
🌟 Unforgettable Performances: Emmy Nominees
These highly acclaimed actors have delivered unforgettable performances that earned them well-deserved Emmy nominations, and their portrait sessions were equally as captivating.
Sir Patrick Stewart: A multi-time Emmy nominee and an absolute titan of the screen and stage. Over a decade of reflecting on my time with Sir Patrick Stewart, I am continually struck by the profound dignity, sharp intelligence, and classical power he projects in front of the lens. Photographing him is always a masterclass in capturing true commanding presence.
Jared Harris: Nominated for brilliant performances in Chernobyl and Mad Men, Jared Harris has a unique ability to convey complex, layered emotions with just a subtle shift in expression.
Ian McShane: Nominated for his legendary role in Deadwood, Ian McShane brings a rugged, unapologetic magnetism to the studio that is impossible to ignore.
Mark Margolis: Remembering the late Mark Margolis, nominated for his iconic role as Hector Salamanca in Breaking Bad. His portrait session captured the rugged character and immense soul of an LA acting great.
