York Army Museum Acquires Portrait of Field Marshal The Lord Houghton of Richmond (Rory Lewis Photographer Non Profit)

York Army Museum, custodian of more than three centuries of British military heritage, has acquired the portrait of Field Marshal The Lord Houghton of Richmond. The museum preserves the collections of both the Prince of Wales’s Own Regiment of Yorkshire and the Royal Dragoon Guards — one infantry, one cavalry — legacies carried forward by the modern Royal Yorkshire Regiment, to which the Prince of Wales’s Own proudly traces its lineage.

The acquisition, made possible through the Rory Lewis Non-Profit, reflects the organization’s mission to safeguard the likenesses of distinguished British, American, and Allied service members for future generations. By enabling works such as this to enter public collections, the non-profit ensures that those who have shaped modern military service and leadership are recorded with dignity and permanence.

Captured at Rory Lewis’s London studio in October 2025, the portrait continues his expanding archival commitment to military portraiture. Drawing inspiration from masters including Holbein and Sir Thomas Lawrence, Lewis employs his hallmark chiaroscuro technique — using sculptural light to evoke depth, restraint, and humanity. The result merges the clarity of contemporary photography with the gravitas of classical portraiture, presenting Lord Houghton with both authority and profound character.
