Nicholas Woodeson— Portrait Sitting, London

Nicholas Woodeson is an English film, television, and theatre actor, and a Drama Desk and Olivier Award nominee. He is widely recognized for his role as Posca — Julius Caesar’s loyal and astute servant — in the BBC/HBO epic series Rome, which introduced him to a global audience.

Much of the portraiture commissioned within the press and editorial world remains risk-averse — carefully lit, polite, and ultimately safe. My work seeks to challenge that restraint. I am drawn instead to moments of tension, quiet, and controlled awkwardness. Too often portraits of public figures become aggrandising or sycophantic; my intention is to strip away artifice and allow strangeness, stillness, and psychological presence to emerge.

Nicholas accepted my invitation to sit for a portrait at my London studio in Farringdon. Over the course of an hour, we created a series of theatrical, contemplative portraits — images rooted in restraint and performance, yet defined by subtle human vulnerability.

Working between London, New York City, and Los Angeles, Rory Lewis creates distinctive portraiture through precise direction and imaginative scenarios. His approach encourages sitters to express something honest and unguarded, resulting in portraits that are both timeless and psychologically resonant. Rory’s clients range from royalty and former Prime Ministers to leading figures in finance, Hollywood, and the armed forces. He is available year-round for portrait sittings in Central London, with regular availability in New York and Los Angeles.
