Robert Picardo: From the Renaissance Lens to Starfleet Academy (Rory Lewis Photographer 2015)
The transition from a "Blank Slate" to a 1,000-year-old mentor is no small feat, but for Robert Picardo, it’s just another day in the life of a photonic legend.
As a portrait photographer, I have had the distinct honor of capturing "Bob" over three separate sittings from Studio City to Glendale and Manhattan spanning a decade—2015, 2021, and now as he returns to our screens in the groundbreaking 2026 series, Star Trek: Starfleet Academy. Seeing him reprise his role as The Doctor (EMH) nearly 25 years after Voyager wrapped is not just a treat for Trekkies; it is a testament to the enduring presence of an actor who is as timeless as the classical art that inspires my work.

The Doctor’s 800-Year Quantum Leap
In his latest return to the Star Trek universe, Picardo faces a fascinating acting challenge. Starfleet Academy is set 1,000 years after his time on Voyager.
In a recent interview with PEOPLE, Bob shared his "mind-blowing" realization about the character’s evolution. Imagine having 800 years of digital memory with perfect clarity. Every colleague he has ever loved has grown old and died while he remains unchanged.
"I thought that on the surface, he would seem the same... the same snarkiness... but when push came to shove, he wasn't very interested in going deeper with any individual. Because what's the end game for me?" — Robert Picardo
This "push-pull" between his human-like growth and the defensive distance of an immortal AI creates a compelling new layer to a character we thought we knew perfectly.
