Shortlisted — Portrait of Britain 2022

A portrait by Rory Lewis of Black Rod Sarah Clarke OBE has been shortlisted for Portrait of Britain 2022, presented by the British Journal of Photography.

Appointed in 2017 and assuming office in February 2018, Sarah Clarke OBE made history as the first woman to serve as Black Rod in the position’s more than 650-year lineage. The portrait, created for Britannia—Rory Lewis’s ongoing project exploring contemporary British leadership—has been selected for display in a nationwide public exhibition.

Chosen from more than 13,000 entries, the photograph will also appear in the Portrait of Britain book, available via Amazon. This marks Rory’s sixth consecutive shortlist and recognition in the award’s five-year history.

Simon Bainbridge, Editorial Director of the British Journal of Photography, noted:
“The portraits celebrate the unique heritage and diversity of modern Britain, as much as its thriving photography culture and the myriad styles and approaches artists employ. Yet, as much as our tribal allegiances are on show, each image reminds us that above all, we are a nation of individuals.”
