Acclaimed British portrait photographer Rory Lewis welcomed award-winning actor Tobias Menzies to his London studio for a cinematic portrait session that explored depth, vulnerability, and quiet strength.

Tobias Menzies, celebrated for his performances in The Crown, Game of Thrones, Outlander, and Rome, is an actor of remarkable subtlety and range. His ability to convey complexity through stillness made him an exceptional subject for this London portrait sitting.

Much of modern portraiture in press and editorial work plays it safe—glossy, polished, and predictable. My goal as a London portrait photographer is to disrupt that complacency, stripping away artifice to reveal something real. I look for moments that feel unscripted—expressions caught between thought and silence, gestures that hint at vulnerability or power.

During our session, Tobias brought both presence and restraint. Over the course of an hour, we explored varied expressions and tones, building a series of portraits that feel at once intimate and enigmatic—true reflections of the man behind the characters.

Working in my London portrait photography studio, I used a minimalist setup inspired by chiaroscuro techniques to shape light like brushstrokes. The result is a collection of portraits that challenge convention—quiet, human, and cinematic in nature.
