Between Sessions: Why My Tuition Clients Now Have a Private Community

A workshop ends at four o’clock. The real learning starts on Monday morning, when you set up a light on your own, with nobody beside you to say β€œlower, and feather it off her cheek.”

Between Sessions: Why My Tuition Clients Now Have a Private Community (Rory Lewis)

I have taught headshot and portrait photography in Los Angeles, New York and London for years. The same thing happens after almost every session. Clients leave with a full notebook and real momentum. Within a fortnight the questions arrive: why is the shadow side muddy, why does the same setup look flat in a smaller room, how do I direct a sitter who freezes. Those questions are the most valuable part of anyone’s education, and until now they had nowhere to go.

So I built somewhere for them to go.

What the community is

It is a private Telegram group, open only to people who have taken a workshop or one-to-one tuition with me. It is not a general photography forum. Nobody posts their holiday snaps or argues about camera brands. Everyone in it has stood in the studio, worked with the same principles and speaks the same language.

What members receive

  • Detailed lesson notes and lighting diagrams from your sessions, so the setup you learned can be rebuilt exactly.

  • Portfolio critiques and personal feedback on new work, with the same candour you got in the room.

  • Headshot-specific breakdowns of posing and lighting technique.

  • Recordings from past workshops and live question-and-answer sessions with me.

  • Priority booking for follow-up one-to-one tuition.

  • Early access to new workshop dates, before they are announced publicly.

Why a subscription

The group costs $19 a month. That is deliberate. A small, steady commitment keeps the room focused on people who are actively shooting and want to improve. It also lets me give the group proper time each week, rather than squeezing it between commissions.

On the image

The photograph advertising the community comes from my own studio work. It is a staged portrait in the tradition of early twentieth-century poster art: a single figure, a single colour and a sky doing half the work. I chose it because it says something about this group without a word of explanation. Commitment, and moving forward together. Members will see how pictures like it are made, from the first light placed to the final retouch.

How to join

If you have trained with me, join here: https://buy.stripe.com/fZu8wP72R3OOcHn3q27wA0j

Once your payment is confirmed you will receive an immediate invitation to the group. If you have not yet trained with me, the place to start is a workshop or a one-to-one session. You can find upcoming dates on the workshops page.
