There are few individuals who carry the weight of cultural history, charisma, and enduring presence quite like William Shatner. Today, we celebrate not only his birthday, but a remarkable creative journey—one I’ve had the privilege of documenting since 2014.

Working with William over the years has been an extraordinary experience. As a portrait photographer based in Los Angeles, New York, and London, I’ve photographed many iconic figures, but there is something uniquely compelling about stepping into a room with Shatner. His presence is immediate. His gaze—unmistakable. His ability to shift between intensity and quiet reflection makes him a dream subject for cinematic portraiture.

A Decade of Portraits — Capturing Character

From our earliest sessions to our most recent collaboration—a striking Holbein-inspired composition—each sitting has revealed something new. William doesn’t just “sit” for a portrait. He inhabits it.

In Los Angeles, where the entertainment industry thrives on image and identity, creating a portrait that transcends the typical headshot is essential. With William, the goal has always been to strip everything back to truth, presence, and story.

Using my signature Caravaggio-inspired lighting—deep shadows, sculpted highlights, and deliberate direction—we’ve created portraits that feel timeless. Not just images, but studies of character.

The Craft Behind the Image

What makes William such a compelling subject is his understanding of stillness. In an industry built on motion, he knows how to hold a frame—how to let silence speak.

For photographers and clients alike, this is the difference between a good portrait and a great one.

Every detail matters:

  • The fall of light across the face

  • The tension (or release) in the hands

  • The subtle shift of expression between frames

With William, these nuances become amplified. The result is work that feels both intimate and monumental.

A Personal Note

William—thank you for your trust over the years. It’s been an honor to collaborate, to experiment, and to create work that I believe will stand the test of time.

Happy Birthday.
