If I Can Photograph a King, I Can Photograph Your Founder

If I Can Photograph a King, I Can Photograph Your Founder (Ray Dalio Rory Lewis Photographer San Francisco, Bay Area Portraits.)

Rory Lewis is now available in San Francisco and the Bay Area for corporate and executive commissions

Over twenty-three years I have photographed a reigning monarch, five British Prime Ministers, and some of the most closely watched figures in global finance, among them Ray Dalio. Each of those sittings came with the same pressures: very little time, a subject who has been photographed a thousand times before, and an image that has to carry real authority the moment it is published.

The Bay Area’s AI executives and founders now face that same pressure. A chief executive of a frontier lab or a fast-scaling startup is no longer just a name on a pitch deck. They are a public figure, quoted in the press, invited to testify, profiled in magazines and judged by investors on how they present. The portrait that goes out with the Series B announcement, the keynote, or the Wall Street Journal interview has to say one thing clearly: this person can be trusted with something that matters.

That is exactly what classical portraiture was invented to do. Holbein painted Henry VIII’s court to project power. Van Dyck made Charles I look like a king even when the politics said otherwise. Rembrandt gave Amsterdam’s merchants the gravity of their fortunes. My work comes from that tradition. I use chiaroscuro and controlled, directional light to create portraits with weight, presence and permanence. It is a deliberate alternative to the bright, interchangeable office headshot that fills most “About Us” pages in Silicon Valley.

My work sits in the permanent collections of the National Portrait Gallery, the Royal Collection and the National Army Museum, and is syndicated through Contour by Getty Images. Corporate clients get the same standard of craft as a state portrait commission, delivered with the efficiency a busy executive diary demands.
