I am very grateful to All About Photo, and to its founder and director Sandrine Hermand-Grisel, for featuring my work in an interview published this month.
It is a generous piece, and a generous way of asking. Sandrine wanted to know what the portraits are for rather than what they were made with, which is the rarer question and the better one, and she gave the answers room to breathe. That is not something a photographer can take for granted, and I am thankful for it.
We talked about reading Medieval History at King's and spending more time in the National Gallery than the library; about Holbein, Rembrandt and the single low light that has governed my work ever since; about David Warner in 2013, Selah, the five Prime Ministers, His Majesty King Abdullah II of Jordan, the Duke of Kent at Kensington Palace, twenty years of military portraiture through Soldiery and Heroes in Focus, the new work with the Italian Army, and the cover portrait of Reece Shearsmith for Things I Took from the Dark.
